I'd agree with you, if it weren't for Kaworu. His love for Shinji was perhaps one of the few real examples of caring about someone more than caring about yourself (true love, whether you believe it was romantic or not). Just when you thought that the show had dived to the bottom of the pit of selfishness, episode 24 comes along.

Good point. You're right.

But like saiya just mentioned, it was from Kaworu's POV only. That doesn't make you less right, thought.

No, Shinji was far too emotionally damaged to have grown to love Kaworu in such short time (even though he did tell Misato, at the end of ep. 24, that he loved him). You're right- he was quick to accept affection, especially when Kaworu was the only (present) character in the series who sincerely cared about him. I think, though, that if Shinji had been able to spend more time with him, he could have found the self-confidence and support he needed in Kowaru, finding love. Kaworu was extremely patient and selfless and his love was unconditional, which was, really, the only thing that could have helped Shinji. Unfortunately, most people just aren't Kaworu. He managed to gain Shinji's trust in one day where none of the other characters ever managed to so much as get him to open up (and Misato DID try to show him true affection- she gave him a roof to sleep under, and tried to comfort him around the time he met Kaworu). I'm not sure WHY Kaworu loved Shinji, but his actions were the only ones, out of all the present characters' in the series, that were corresponding to his words when he told Shinji he loved him.

Well you have take into account that at the time Misato brought him home, he was completely different and was soo depressed and needed emotional support. If Kaworu was around longer, I see them becoming great friends, but nothing more.

I never said they would have gotten involved in a romantic relationship (I'm not getting into THAT again, but I am, personally, a Kaworu x Shinji shipper). But, I do believe that Kaworu loved him, and was one of the only people who could have gained Shinji's love in return, after all he'd been through by the time he met Kaworu. (When I say love, I'm not necessarily talking about romantic love)

There was a point in the series where Shinji WASN'T depressed and in need of emotional support?

Well during the whole series but didn't desperately needed it like how he did during the end of the series.

I never understood people that are pro non-cannon relationships. I mean, if it's not hinted in the least and it isn't even in-character, what's the point?

I may think "Whoo, boy. I would love to see Kaji and Rits as a couple". But really, what would be the point? It's not cannon.

Not bashing, just thinking out loud.

Yea I think it was just on Kaworu part, I really dont belive Shinji felt the same way. Also Kaworu being an Angel, his perception of love is probly diffrent than ours.

well it's certainly more canon than:

Asuka x Rei

which some people are quite fond of.

We guys tend to be more perverted. So that may be true. Still, it's a fan paring like Shingi/Kawrou, a fantasy pariing.

Nobody would ship that "for real".

This kind of stuff is only good for illustrations (like the Maya/Rits book cover - Rits is not shown as bi or lesbian, nor we see her showing any interest in Maya in the series). They have no real value or meaning.

Only a person that never seen the show would actually ship Rei/Asuka.

They have value and meaning!

the value is nonsencial yuri pairings!

the meaning is sexy-ness!
