A short 15 second TV commercial aired for the upcoming Evangelion 2.0, You can (not) advance broadcast on NTV this August 26th. The commercial itself doesn’t show anything new, but it’s somewhat exciting to see something at this point, even if it’s about 2.0.

New York Times Reviews Evangelion 2.0

The New York Times published a brief, and somewhat scathing review of Evangelion 2.0 online on January 20th, and in print on January 21st. While I, and some of my peers, would likely go into fanboy-mode and defend the image of Evangelion to the New York Times, citing certain misunderstanding or oversight into the franchise, I must be humble and point out that this is a mainstream publication writing about Evangelion. So regardless of how little is said, positive, or negative, the fact that they are reviewing Evangelion 2.0 says a lot. In many ways, it validates FUNimation’s theatrical run of these new films, which many of us fans find unnecessary and pointless. Many of us have already seen the fansubs of 2.0, and those who haven’t will likely get the home video release, due for release only a few months past the theatrical run. But the fact that mainstream publications are writing about 2.0 says that this run is helping get the series exposure, which is exactly what we as fans want. We want Evangelion to prosper and flourish, and that can only happen when the show is supported by an audience that is large and growing. I’d also like to point out that despite what fans have claimed, FUNimation has stated that these theatrical runs are not a requirement of their license. Both they, and their licensing partner in Japan want to see a theatrical run, so both sides are happy with the arrangements.

Hideaki Anno’s works at Proto Anime Cut in Berlin

From January 20th to March 6th , 2011, in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, original drawings from several Japanese anime directors will be exhibited in the Spaces and Visions in Japanese animation as part of Proto Anime Cut. The exhibition includes art by Hideaki Anno, Haruhiko Higami, Koji Morimoto, Hiromasa Ogura, Mamoru Oshii, and Takashi Watabe. Both Koji Morimoto and Hiromasa Ogura attended the opening on the 20th. The les jardins des piloted also has some sample images. Some of these look fantastic and it’s too bad more of the art can’t be displayed on the website. There are 2 drawings of Cut 710 (from Evangelion 2.0, shown to the right), one is the layout by Takashi Watabe and the other looks to be the complete cut.

Evangelion 2.0 Screenings in Southern California

Last month the U.S. Evangelion 2.0 theatrical run’s schedule was posted but a few venues in San Diego were TBA. The Ultra Star Cinemas showtimes have been announced at their website and it includes a few more theatres that weren’t part of the original announcement. Evangelion 2.0 will have one-time-screening at 5 Ultra Star theatres throughout Southern California on January 20th at 8pm.

Evangelion 2.0 Theatre tickets giveaway

Similar to what happened for the Evangelion 1.0 theatre run over a year ago, Eleven Arts, Inc. has asked Anime News Network to give away up to 245 tickets to Evangelion 2.0, You Can (Not) Advance, screenings across theatres in Canada. There will be 5 available tickets per theatre for a screening on January 20th, 2011. Go to Anime News Network’s sign-up page to enter the contest. Winners will be announces around January 11th.

Funimation, Evangelion, and Video-On-Demand

Funimation Entertainment and Asian Media Rights agreed to a Video-on-Demand partnership where titles such as the new Evangelion movies and Summer Wars will be made available in North America. As many as 20 or more titles in all will be available on demand via cable and satellite. Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, will be the first anime film made available on demand before Funimation releases the extended Evangelion 2.22 version on DVD and Bluray in March.

Funimation’s Evangelion 2.0 Trailer on Hulu

Funimation’s Evangelion 2.0 movie trailer is up on Hulu.com, so that means it’s region restricted. It’s got some spoilers in it, there’s no dialogue (although Mari makes a sound), the choice of music is a little hit/miss, and it feels like the trailer got cut off at the end. At the end, it says “Coming Winter 2011″, so I assume that will be the DVD/BD release and not the theatrical run which starts in January of next year. Or, maybe they’re referring to January 2011 as “Winter 2011″.

Schedule for Evangelion 2.0 in U.S. theatres

Cinema Asia Releasing, Eleven Arts and FUNimation Entertainment have released a few Evangelion 2.0, You Can (Not) Advance, screening dates for the U.S. starting from January 19th. There are still dates that are TBA. Most of the runs are only a couple of days but some theatres will be screening for a week or more. There are also a few theatres that will screen Evangelion 1.0, You Are (Not) Alone, prior to the 2.0 screening.

Cineplex with 1 day Evangelion 2.0 Screening in Canada

On January 20th, 2011, Cineplex theatres will be having a 1 day screening of Evangelion 2.0, You Can (Not) Advance, across Canada. Find a theatre near you then go to their Evangelion 2.0 movie page to book advance tickets online (make sure to select January 20th). It looks like ticket prices vary from theatre to theatre, but most of the showtimes seem to be at 7:00pm.

The length of the movie is listed at 1 hour, 49 minutes, which matches the run-time of the actual 2.0 movie (as opposed to the 2.22 video release on DVD and BluRay), no word on the kind of print, though. This is good news, let’s hope the U.S. gets a similar announcement soon.

Evangelion 2.0 at Leeds International Film Festival

Evangelion 2.0 will be screening at the 24th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) at Leeds, West Yorkshire, on Friday, November 19th and Sunday, November 21st. The Friday screening will be at the Leeds Town Hall at 6:30pm and the Sunday screening will be at the Hyde Park Picture House at 1:45pm. Ticket prices will be £6.50 and can be purchased online.

The Leeds International Film Festival is the largest film festival in England outside of London. The film festival is divided into feature length films, documentaries, experimental cinema, short films, and horror/anime/manga. Among other anime screened at the festival (on the same days as Evangelion) include Gintama the Movie, One Piece – Strong World, Mardock Scramble, and Redline. An all day pass can be purchased for £20.

Funimation Licenses Evangelion 2.0

Funimation announced today that it has acquired Evangelion 2.0 from NTV. As of yet, there’s nothing on Funimation’s Evangelion site about 2.0, but the DVD and BluRay release is slated for 2011. There will be more updates as information is made available.

As an update to the ReelAnime 2010 announcement, Madman’s site has been updated with screening dates and locations for Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0, King of Thorn, Summer Wars, and Redline. The site also says that the English and Japanese voice actresses of Asuka, Tiffany Grant and Yuko Miyamura, will be at the Australian premiere of Evangelion 2.0 at the Dendy Newtown in Sydney on Thursday August 5th at 6:30pm.

Evangelion 2.0 Screening in Montreal

Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (Japanese with English subtitles) will be screening in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival 2010 on July 10th at 12:00 PM at the Concordia Hall Theater. The screening will be the original 2.0 on 35mm film. The Concordia Hall Theater is located on 1455 de Maisonneuve O. in Montreal. Tickets will be $8 and can be bought either at the theater, by phone, or over the internet at admission.com (French).

The Fantasia Festival is North America’s largest film festival which plays genre films from all over the world. Fantasia Film Festival 2010 will last from July 8th to July 28th and include films such as “Gintama: The Movie”, Mamoru Oshii’s 2009 short film “Je t’aime”, Katayama’s “King of Thorn” and “Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection” among the list of over 100 films to be screened during the 22 day span.

Evangelion 2.22 Arrives

I unexpectedly got a knock on my door earlier and it was the mail man, with my copy of the Evangelion 2.22 “First Press” BluRay. I didn’t have much time to play around with the disc, but I managed to get some pictures on my mobile phone.

I ordered mine from CD Japan and was surprised it arrived almost halfway around the world so soon. I’m told that the CD Japan pre-orders gets you a bonus picture. It’s a little larger than postcard size, came inside a protected plastic sleeve and I got one of a close-up of Mari up close to Shinji’s face (shown in picture to the right), as seen in the 2.0 previews at the end of Evangelion 1.0. It’s a nice free gift, but it’s nothing special.

I opened everything up and the packaging is as to be expected. A folding dark blue case houses the black BluRay disc and on the other side, a slot for the accompanying booklet, a flyer, and most importantly, the film strip.

The film strip comes in a presentation sleeve almost identical to the one that came with the Limited Edition Evangelion 1.01 release. It opens up off-center with the Evangelion logo on the right and the film strip centered on the left.

The Folding BluRay case and the Film Strip

The film strip that I got features a plugsuited Asuka inside her Eva’s entry plug. I guess I couldn’t ask for anything more. Asuka in her plugsuit for 2.0′s film strip. Although I’m sure there are more coveted shots of Asuka from the film (or even ones of Rei) compared to what I got. I’m happy with it nonetheless. It’s hard to get a good picture of it because it needs to be backlit, and to make matters worse, I only have the camera on my mobile phone. Here’s a close-up of the film strip using my laptop’s screen as the backlighting.
