MP Evas growing Rei's face

(A quick search didn't turn up anything, but I apologise if this has been answered before)

Has anyone ever been able to figure out why the MP Evas suddenly grow Rei's face in EoE? There didn't seem to be any sort of explanation given, and it's bugged me for ages. It just...happens. :?

In the movie, they state that the MP Evas have syncronized or are resonating with Rei/Lilith. There is some sort of connection established amongst Lilith and the Units, what that is precisely is probably unimportant.

Why this is happening might be because SEELE are still in control of the MP Eva's and are directing them to merge. Or perhaps the lack of a pilot might have something to do with it. It's actually a good question. SEELE did seem to support all of this, and it might be the case that the MP's needed to commit hari-kari in the manner that they did in order to join in complementation, so best to put them under GNRs control. Or perhaps the MP Eva's were designed with resonance with Lillth in mind.

All I know is my gut says maybe.

I always just thought that they were actually designed by SEELE to merge with either Lillith or Unit 01/Lillith's clone in third impact. I never really thought why I kinda just went with whatever the hell they threw at me. my poor mind hurt the first time i watched it. lol

This is the kind of thing we could get very lost in the pedantics of.
I think we can say at least that SEELE weren't against the idea of the MP's merging with Rei.

In what sense were the Evas merging with Lilith? They were clearly still seperate from GNR.

I believe Fuyutsuki says words to that effect immediately before the MP's grow lots of smiling Rei faces. Also, the MP's AT Fields shortly being resonating with each other, and with Rei.

Oh, I believe this is actually the answer to your original question. The MP Eva's sprout Rei faces because they are merging somehow with Lilith. Why they are doing this is another question.

Waaaaaait a minute. Wasn't there a deleted scene when Armisael is trying to merge with Zerogouki, and it's other end sprouts a Rei-torso? :? Perhaps the dialogue there might shed some light. Or something. I've only seen in Japanese, so I have clue what they were sayin.

yeah in episode 23' armisael merges with unit 00 and turns into a GNR before exploding. I'm not even going to try and figure that one out either. the commentary in the platinum books just says that they do this just because it also happens in EoE and it just sets the groundwork for EoE. I just think it's the angel's ability to kinda absorb and join with it's target.

in that case, it was either trying to incapacitate 01 or actually showing Rei's innermost desires (she says something to this effect: do i want to be one with ikari?)
that really didnt have much to do with the MP evas
the MP eva's probably started that crap after what everyone else said; the resonation of the AT fields

If the harpies are supposed to be 'merging' with Lilith, they don't do a very good job... They get those horrifying mutated heads (as if they weren't ugly enough to begin with), and their bodies seem to take on marshmallowy properties, but otherwise they don't change at all.

hopefully before. The regular evas looked cool, almost like fish head evas. but after they got creepy looking.
