I wonder how many missed it. It seems quite obvious once pointed out. At the risk of looking into it too much I wonder if it’s a visual suggestion of how Misato feels towards Shinji. Her feelings become quite clear during EoE. I’m sure no one here would deny that she’s slightly screwy.

and it might have been a joke.,...it looks less like a phallic symbol in Renewl after all...still it STILL looks like a penis

If it were a joke, I doubt it would be in Renewal at all.
It means something!!!

Which could be the reason why they changed it.... to something equally phallic.

The Rebuild chair is more evocative of a penis wearing a condom. I would venture to say the suggestion was intentionally kept.
