Sadamoto’s Manga at final Volume, # 13 (Updated)

According to Minna no Eva Fan and Crunchy Roll, Sadamoto’s Manga has finally reached Volume 13, which will be the last volume in the Manga series (previously revealed by Sadamoto to be the final volume). As of this writing, Stages 84 through 90 (7 Stages) of Volume 13 have been printed in the seinen manga magazine Young Ace. UPDATE: Volume 13 is planned to be released in Japan this year. Discussion with MinnaNoEva Fan Blog revealed that because of the small number of pages in Stage 90, it’s possible (but still pending) if Volume 13 will be the conclusion of the manga. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

VIZ Adds Evangelion Manga for Weekly Digital Releases

VIZ Media, the licensor and North American publisher of Sadamoto’s Neon Genesis Evangelion Manga, will be releasing stages (chapters) of the manga in digital format on their website and manga app for iOS (iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone) for $0.99 a stage, one stage a week. The first stage, “Angel Attack”, is free as a preview and the 2nd stage, “Reunion”, is the release for this week.

VIZ has been doing digital releases on many of their manga properties since they’ve released their manga reading app for iOS last November, this is the first digital release for the Evangelion manga by VIZ. Though most of their digital releases occur monthly and by volume, Evangelion’s is weekly by stages.

The August issue of Young Ace magazine contains a “Clear File” for Asuka, similar to the Rei Clear File that was included in the March issue, and looks to have news that a new stage will be in the September issue, due on sale on August 4th.

Evangelion: Complete 2.0

Evangelion: Complete 2.0 is being released this summer. Early orders will receive a woven bag and a film strip as a bonus. The books have over 650 total pages as well as art and posters by Sadamoto. 100 Page Evangelion Digest, Young Ace vol. 9

The latest issue of Young Ace, volume 9, contains the rumored 100 page digest “Evangelion Extra Issue”. The digest contains some parody mangas, summaries of the 12 volumes of Sadamoto’s Evangelion manga, a preview of stage 77 of the manga, and, probably the most interesting, some message from Gainax staff to Sadamoto and his responses.

Anuraag Agrawal at the english-language evangelion mailing list, has graciously provided translations of some of these messages:

Hideaki Anno: Hurry and finish. Good luck.

Sadamoto: After finishing up volume 12, I’ll have to start working on
Rebuild, so wait just a little bit…

Hiroyuki Imaishi: Speaking of the Eva manga, when I first entered the company, since I had been drawing for a Dojin magazine, I helped out as an assistant for one day. I still remember how utterly unusable my work then was. I’m really sorry about that. orz

Sadamoto: I can’t even remember that assistant thing at all. I’m looking forward to your next project and cheering you on.

Kazuhiro Takamura: Congrats on the release of volume 12. Before becoming an animator, and even now, I’ve been studying the girls you draw, in particular the lines of their body. That line which seems to flow from back to hip, as much as I try to copy it, I can’t seem to be able to. I wonder if that’s because I just suck, or maybe I don’t have enough pervertedness yet. Thanks for giving me that nickname “earl of orgasms”.

Sadamoto: Follow your own “way of the moe-anime”. Bore into that hard disk
of yours full of porn with your drill lol (ed: euphemism?)

Mine Yoshizaki: Sadamoto-sensei, I was waiting! Congratulations on your new release. With this, there’s one more “something”. I’m a huge fan of Evangelion, of Eva, and I love all of Nerv staff, umbilical cables, missiles, black holes in the moon, somewhat lacking ceremony drawings, everyone at Gainax, and also Sadamoto-san. But I’m not gay, so don’t worry. What I love the most is the AT field!

Sadamoto: There was already one more “something” (ed: not sure what they’re referring to, could be some bet along the lines of “one figure for every volume you release”) By the way, I went to the ZELE (marked with the pronunciation ze-ru ed: the same as SEELE) beauty parlor you recommended, and the staff there corrected me saying it’s pronounced zeru (ed: not ze-ru). lol

Okay, maybe not super interesting but probably better than the parody mangas. “Earl of orgasms”? (“orz” is a Japanese emoticon for bowing on your knees in apology)

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s “Summer Wars” Character Designs

Summer Wars, a movie by director Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto that will be in theatres in Japan on August 1st, has some of his designs appearing in the Web Animation Magazine.

Although this doesn’t really have anything to do with Evangelion, it’s still pretty cool to see some of Sadamoto’s artwork. Sadamoto, who also did the Character Designs for “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time“, will be rejoining much of the same cast who produced that movie, along with Madhouse Studios. After seeing the HD teaser and the trailer, it reminds me a lot of Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which is a good thing.

Mari’s Plugsuit and Be@rbrick Keychain

The Sadamoto illustration donning the third round of Evangelion 2.0 tickets appeared today, showing the new character, Mari Illustrious Makinami. She wears the plugsuit previously seen in the first theatrical trailer, and, with the helmet off, provides confirmation for her long-suspected role as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-05. Also, not surprisingly, the “secret” Be@rbrick mobile phone keychain character is Mari in a plugsuit. The Be@rbrick keychains are sold along with the Evangelion 2.0 Advance tickets in selected stores.

That the plugsuited character in the first trailer is Mari is also confirmed on the “Characters” page newly added to the official Eva 2.0 website. (Oddly, Ryoji Kaji is not yet listed.)

Sadamoto’s “Carmine” out on 3/25

Though announced some time ago, we never had a news post on it, so better late than never!

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is coming out with a third book devoted exclusively to his works, Carmine, to be released on 3/25/09. It will compile over 100 of the illustrations released since his 2nd book, Der Mond, from such works as Neon Genesis Evangelion (of course!), FLCL, Diebuster, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and .hack. The Limited Release is priced at a rather steep 13000 yen (about $133 US), but includes five bonuses: a deluxe outer case; a CD-ROM; two large-format stick posters of Rei and Asuka; Sadamoto’s table talk with Hideaki Anno, Mamoru Hosoda, and Kazuya Tsurumaki; and two archival-quality genga (animation key frame drawing) reproductions. Published by Kadokawa Shoten, 160 pages total, and B4 size (the same as Der Mond).

EDIT: Apologies for the error about Carmine “compiling Alpha and Der Mond“; I’m not entirely sure how I arrived at this conclusion, but I have been tarred and feathered accordingly. Also, the aforementioned “genga” are apparently not “genga” as I’ve come to understand them, but just two finished illustrations from the book printed on card stock…

Sadamoto’s manga to return in July

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto last treated Eva fans to a chapter of his manga adaptation around October 2007, and, after an unusually long procrastination cycle, it looks as though there just might still be hope.

According to a flyer packed with newly-released volumes of the Shinji Ikari Raising Project and Gakuen Datenroku manga, the Evangelion manga will pick up in July ’09, in the debut issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s new magazine Young Ace. The manga had previously been serialized, since its inception in 1994, in Kadokawa Shoten’s Shounen Ace. Watch for it!
