Studio GAINAX launched its first of a series of Lectures on creating Anime. Director Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL, Diebuster, Evangelion) is the first lecturer and talks about storyboarding, the stage right/left rules, imaginary lines between characters, character continuity, and elements within a scene.

The transcripts of the first 2 lectures by Tsurumaki have been posted on the lecture series site: Part 1, Part 2, and a Glossary of terms. Although the transcripts are in Japanese, they are straightforward enough such that a robo-translation (e.g. Google or Babelfish) yields at least something that’s coherent enough to follow.

In the stage left/right section, he mentions how in the first episode of Evangelion, Sachiel moves from right to left, but during the first engagement between Eva-01 and Sachiel, Sachiel is to the left and the Evangelion is on the right.

Eva Extra-07 in conjunction with Evangelion 2.22

Eva Extra, a free publication from Studio Khara (although 03 was sold in theatres), will have a seventh issue released on May 26th, 2010, which looks to be released in conjunction with the release of Evangelion 2.22 (DVD and BluRay). It will be in A5 format with 24 pages, full color, contains some illustrations by Kazuya Tsurumaki and will be distributed in various stores the Evangelion 2.22 DVD/BD are sold and at Animate.

The June 2010 issue of NewType features Mari Illustruous Makinami in her plugsuit on the cover and comes with a set of “Weiß Schwarz” cards and a deck of Evangelion playing cards that feature images from the new films. There’s also an interview with Maaya Sakamoto, Mari’s voice actress, and Kazuya Tsurumaki.

“Weiß Schwarz” is a Japanese trading card game (turn-based dueling) created by Bushiroad, separated by the “Weiß” (White) side and “Schwarz” (Black) side. The White and Black sides are featured by characters popular to males and females (respectively).

Evangelion 2.0 DVD set for Spring Release

In a recent interview one of the directors of Rebuild 2.0, Kazuya Tsurumaki, stated that they are aiming for a spring release of the DVD, with the mention of currently working on a retake (EDIT: as in touching up animation and possibly adding new scenes, not anything to do with the popular doujinshi series) for the DVD release.

There is still no word on a Blu-ray release, or any information about specific release details at this point.

UPDATE: More news has come to light courtesy of the Project Eva blog. They are saying that the Blu-ray as well as DVD for 2.0 will be going on sale in spring next year. They also have further excerpts from the Tsurumaki interview where he talks about the different versions of the film.

Giant Evangelion 2.0 Poster up for Auction

You can be a proud owner of a huge 3.5 meter by 18 meter Evangelion 2.0 weather resistant vinyl poster signed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. It was hung outside of the building at 109 Shibuya in Tokyo to promote the new movie. It is being auctioned for charity on the Japanese Yahoo Auctions site and the auction ends on August 19th. As of this posting, the current bid is 30,500円. Pretty steep, but this is a one-of-a-kind item and considering some 9 inch tall figures can run up to 15,000円, it’s not a ridiculous price.

Along with this giant poster, a smaller, 1.5 meter by 2.78 meter poster featuring plugsuit clad Shinji, Asuka and Rei, is also up for auction. Also made of weather resistent vinyl, this one is signed by Hidenori Matsubara, the animation director for the rebuild films. Strangely, this smaller poster (probably because it features the beloved pilots) has a current bid of 101,000円.
