Evangelion 3.0 International title revealed, Eva Final release date revealed

The official Evangelion website http://www.evangelion.co.jp/ was updated for New Years with new information: The International title for Evangelion Q (to be released in Fall 2012) is You Can (Not) Redo. Evangelion ? was also revealed to be released in 2013.

New GAINAX Anime: Dantalian no Shoka

Nothing new in the Evangelion front since the discovery that Evangelion: 3.0/Q may be further behind schedule than most anticipated as well as Hideaki Anno telling fans to “please be patient”. So there’s going to be a short update about our friends over at GAINAX.

Their new upcoming show this July Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian (ダンタリアンの書架) released a promotional video, giving us a first look at the series.

The premise revolves around Hugh Anthony Disward, who finds a library in the mansion he has inherited, and a girl Dalian who has access to the prohibited books of the demons. It is directed by Yutaka Uemura, who has previously worked with Mahoromatic and Gurren Lagann, and is expected to be 13 episodes. This fantasy title contrasts pretty heavily with GAINAX’s previous show, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. Here’s hoping for some upcoming news about Evangelion.

Hideaki Anno Produces “Kantoku Shikkaku”

Studio Khara tweeted today that Hideaki Anno will co-produce a film directed by Katsuyuki Hirano called Kantoku Shikkaku with Koinobori Pictures. The film will open this September 3rd in Japan. According to Anime New Network, the film will feature the late actress Yumika Hayashi who died in 2005.

From January 20th to March 6th , 2011, in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, original drawings from several Japanese anime directors will be exhibited in the Spaces and Visions in Japanese animation as part of Proto Anime Cut. The exhibition includes art by Hideaki Anno, Haruhiko Higami, Koji Morimoto, Hiromasa Ogura, Mamoru Oshii, and Takashi Watabe. Both Koji Morimoto and Hiromasa Ogura attended the opening on the 20th. The les jardins des piloted also has some sample images. Some of these look fantastic and it’s too bad more of the art can’t be displayed on the website. There are 2 drawings of Cut 710 (from Evangelion 2.0, shown to the right), one is the layout by Takashi Watabe and the other looks to be the complete cut.

Extra Curricular Lesson with Hideaki Anno

Sometime in 1999, after Neon Genesis Evangelion finished and during the pre-production of KareKano, Evangelion’s directory Hideaki Anno appeared on a TV show on N.H.K. called “Welcome Back for an Extracurricular Lesson, Sempai!”, which features Japanese celebrities revisiting their old stomping grounds and teaches a class in their old primary school. In this episode, Anno returns to Ube, a factory town in Yamaguchi Prefecture, to teach kids about animation.

Along the way, he talks a bit about himself, about Evangelion, about art, and about the town he grew up in. This is particularly interesting when one considers that he has just come from a dark time in his life, especially right after the success/controversy caused by Evangelion. One of the first things he admits in the show is how he is deathly afraid of children, as he is about to walk into a classroom filled with them and meeting them for the first time. From time to time, it seems like Anno is being quick with his replies to questions, yet sometimes it’s clear that he’s enjoying himself.

When Anno shows up to the school and meets the kids, he gets to see what the kids had been working on before his arrival; pictures and descriptions of what the kids thought Anno was like, with greatly varying degrees of accuracy. This was a pretty fun segment.

At some point, the class is divided into groups and one group goes to see Anno’s parents to interview them. They show some of his paintings and pictures when he was young, and apparently, he doesn’t like insects.

Another group has gone to meet with some of Anno’s childhood friends to interview them. Anno liked to draw manga a lot when he was a kid, no big surprises there.

Later, as we see various parts of Ube, Anno talks about his hometown, about the recession, and what it was like when he was a kid. He also mentions how he loves the telephone poles and wires (not surprised).

Near the end of the episode, Anno seems pretty relaxed. All the students are putting together their final animations, which will later be strung together in one continuous reel, and in the background, Anno is playing around on one of the camera dollies.

Sorry, this has taken so long to post (it’s been like 3 years). Unofficially coordinating with people on the internet that all have full-time jobs sometimes yields these long waits. Most of the people who already knew about this was able to find a copy of it from somewhere or another, but over the course of nitpicking, re-encodes, re-translations, re-timing the subtitles, trying to put together video offerings on this site, and finally getting tired of it all and just putting it on the internet, we have for you 2 copies of what was released on DVD via Animeplay magazine. One is a softsubbed MKV with x264 video (624×480), vorbis 2 channel audio, SRT subtitles (new translation) and the original VOB subtitles that appeared on the DVD. The other is a hardsubbed AVI with XviD video and mp3 2 channel audio. You can download them directly from this site or use a torrent.

100 Page Evangelion Digest, Young Ace vol. 9

The latest issue of Young Ace, volume 9, contains the rumored 100 page digest “Evangelion Extra Issue”. The digest contains some parody mangas, summaries of the 12 volumes of Sadamoto’s Evangelion manga, a preview of stage 77 of the manga, and, probably the most interesting, some message from Gainax staff to Sadamoto and his responses.

Anuraag Agrawal at the english-language evangelion mailing list, has graciously provided translations of some of these messages:

Hideaki Anno: Hurry and finish. Good luck.

Sadamoto: After finishing up volume 12, I’ll have to start working on
Rebuild, so wait just a little bit…

Hiroyuki Imaishi: Speaking of the Eva manga, when I first entered the company, since I had been drawing for a Dojin magazine, I helped out as an assistant for one day. I still remember how utterly unusable my work then was. I’m really sorry about that. orz

Sadamoto: I can’t even remember that assistant thing at all. I’m looking forward to your next project and cheering you on.

Kazuhiro Takamura: Congrats on the release of volume 12. Before becoming an animator, and even now, I’ve been studying the girls you draw, in particular the lines of their body. That line which seems to flow from back to hip, as much as I try to copy it, I can’t seem to be able to. I wonder if that’s because I just suck, or maybe I don’t have enough pervertedness yet. Thanks for giving me that nickname “earl of orgasms”.

of yours full of porn with your drill lol (ed: euphemism?)

Mine Yoshizaki: Sadamoto-sensei, I was waiting! Congratulations on your new release. With this, there’s one more “something”. I’m a huge fan of Evangelion, of Eva, and I love all of Nerv staff, umbilical cables, missiles, black holes in the moon, somewhat lacking ceremony drawings, everyone at Gainax, and also Sadamoto-san. But I’m not gay, so don’t worry. What I love the most is the AT field!

Sadamoto: There was already one more “something” (ed: not sure what they’re referring to, could be some bet along the lines of “one figure for every volume you release”) By the way, I went to the ZELE (marked with the pronunciation ze-ru ed: the same as SEELE) beauty parlor you recommended, and the staff there corrected me saying it’s pronounced zeru (ed: not ze-ru). lol

Okay, maybe not super interesting but probably better than the parody mangas. “Earl of orgasms”? (“orz” is a Japanese emoticon for bowing on your knees in apology)

The official website for Evangelion 1.0: You are (not) alone by Funimation is now online. The front page features a clip of the first 9 minutes (dubbed) along with Anno’s statement of what he wanted to do with Rebuild back in 2007. Also included on the website is standard character information, some wallpaper downloads, and a few dub clips of the film.

Moyoco manga about Hideaki Anno

Manga about Anno

To celebrate Moyoco Anno’s 20 year anniversary of writing manga, a manga book about her husband Hideaki Anno has been released.

The book, roughly translated as “Unsupervised Director Report” is said to contain insider information about Anno and is currently available for purchase through Amazon Japan’s website. It’s priced at ￥840 ($8.97).

Evangelion 1.01, Shiki-Jitsu, Love and Pop

Evangelion 1.01, Shiki-Jitsu, and Love and Pop will be screening at an all night Saturday event at the Shin-Bungeiza in the Ikebukuro area of Tokyo on February the 14th. The Shin-Bungeiza is reknown for showing movies all night and you can stay for as many movies as you want.

Love and Pop, Anno’s first live action movie, was made in 1998 and won the “Best New Director” and “Best New Talent” (Asumi Miwa) prize at the Yokohama Film Festival. Shiki-Jitsu (roughly translated as “Ritual Day”) was Anno’s second live action movie. It was made in 2000 and received the “Best Artistic Contribution Award” at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
