Sadamoto’s Evangelion Manga Resumes

The August issue of Young Ace magazine contains a “Clear File” for Asuka, similar to the Rei Clear File that was included in the March issue, and looks to have news that a new stage will be in the September issue, due on sale on August 4th.

November 2010 Young Ace with Mari Figure

The November 2010 issue of Young Ace (Kadokawa Shoten) includes a new Mari Makinami Illustrious (ver. 2) “Special Appendix” figure. The figure was announced back in the April 2010 issue and some adverts included it with the August 2010 issue, which for some reason didn’t pan out. Instead it was bundled with the just released November 2010 issue. Similar to previous “Special Appendix” Kaiyodo Evangelion figures, they’re pretty small and kind of cheaply made, but you can’t expect much when it’s bundled with an $8 magazine (658 yen without tax). It’s limited so if you want one, ask your importer or go to your favorite online store (if you’re not in Japan). There has previously been a “Special Appendix” figure of Rei, Asuka, and Mari (thus the “ver. 2″).

Evangelion: Complete 2.0

Evangelion: Complete 2.0 is being released this summer. Early orders will receive a woven bag and a film strip as a bonus. The books have over 650 total pages as well as art and posters by Sadamoto. Eva Extra-07 in conjunction with Evangelion 2.22

Eva Extra, a free publication from Studio Khara (although 03 was sold in theatres), will have a seventh issue released on May 26th, 2010, which looks to be released in conjunction with the release of Evangelion 2.22 (DVD and BluRay). It will be in A5 format with 24 pages, full color, contains some illustrations by Kazuya Tsurumaki and will be distributed in various stores the Evangelion 2.22 DVD/BD are sold and at Animate.

The June 2010 issue of NewType features Mari Illustruous Makinami in her plugsuit on the cover and comes with a set of “Weiß Schwarz” cards and a deck of Evangelion playing cards that feature images from the new films. There’s also an interview with Maaya Sakamoto, Mari’s voice actress, and Kazuya Tsurumaki.

“Weiß Schwarz” is a Japanese trading card game (turn-based dueling) created by Bushiroad, separated by the “Weiß” (White) side and “Schwarz” (Black) side. The White and Black sides are featured by characters popular to males and females (respectively).

100 Page Evangelion Digest, Young Ace vol. 9

The latest issue of Young Ace, volume 9, contains the rumored 100 page digest “Evangelion Extra Issue”. The digest contains some parody mangas, summaries of the 12 volumes of Sadamoto’s Evangelion manga, a preview of stage 77 of the manga, and, probably the most interesting, some message from Gainax staff to Sadamoto and his responses.

Anuraag Agrawal at the english-language evangelion mailing list, has graciously provided translations of some of these messages:

Hideaki Anno: Hurry and finish. Good luck.

Sadamoto: After finishing up volume 12, I’ll have to start working on
Rebuild, so wait just a little bit…

Hiroyuki Imaishi: Speaking of the Eva manga, when I first entered the company, since I had been drawing for a Dojin magazine, I helped out as an assistant for one day. I still remember how utterly unusable my work then was. I’m really sorry about that. orz

Sadamoto: I can’t even remember that assistant thing at all. I’m looking forward to your next project and cheering you on.

Kazuhiro Takamura: Congrats on the release of volume 12. Before becoming an animator, and even now, I’ve been studying the girls you draw, in particular the lines of their body. That line which seems to flow from back to hip, as much as I try to copy it, I can’t seem to be able to. I wonder if that’s because I just suck, or maybe I don’t have enough pervertedness yet. Thanks for giving me that nickname “earl of orgasms”.

Sadamoto: Follow your own “way of the moe-anime”. Bore into that hard disk
of yours full of porn with your drill lol (ed: euphemism?)

Mine Yoshizaki: Sadamoto-sensei, I was waiting! Congratulations on your new release. With this, there’s one more “something”. I’m a huge fan of Evangelion, of Eva, and I love all of Nerv staff, umbilical cables, missiles, black holes in the moon, somewhat lacking ceremony drawings, everyone at Gainax, and also Sadamoto-san. But I’m not gay, so don’t worry. What I love the most is the AT field!

Sadamoto: There was already one more “something” (ed: not sure what they’re referring to, could be some bet along the lines of “one figure for every volume you release”) By the way, I went to the ZELE (marked with the pronunciation ze-ru ed: the same as SEELE) beauty parlor you recommended, and the staff there corrected me saying it’s pronounced zeru (ed: not ze-ru). lol

Okay, maybe not super interesting but probably better than the parody mangas. “Earl of orgasms”? (“orz” is a Japanese emoticon for bowing on your knees in apology)

Evangelion Chronicle Reprint

The 30 volume Evangelion Chronicle weekly magazine published by Sony Magazines will be getting a “revised edition” by De Agostini and will include 10 new volumes. The weekly releases of the reprint will start in January 19th of 2010. The first issue will have a special price of ¥ 390 while the remaining issues will be sold for ¥ 690. The new volumes (31-40) will include information about the “New Theatrical Version” of Evangelion, or what most fans call Rebuild. Also, like the original run of Evangelion Chronicle, the issues can be taken apart and put in a 3 ring binder. For the reprint, it seems the binder will be included with the first issue.

There’s only speculation of what will be different from the original printing, but most people will probably be more interested to see what ends up in the new volumes.

Eva-Extra 04 and Movie Program at the Evangelion Store

The Evangelion 2.0 movie program and Eva-Extra 04, both sold at the theatres during the 2.0 run, are now being sold at the Evangelion Store. According to the product description, both look to be the same as what was sold at the theatres.

The 2.0 movie program contained lots of movie stills, some from the trailers, as well as an interview with Tsurumaki about the CG in the movie. It’s A4 sized, has a couple of centerfolds and has Evangelion Unit-01 on the cover illustrated by Takeshi Honda. The EvaStore is selling it for 1,000 円. Note that the movie program does contain 2.0 spoilers.

Eva-Extra 04 is a plastic bound with a plastic sleeve, 66 page version of Eva-Extra containing much of the images from the first 3. It also contains “pin-ups” with the previous Eva-Extra covers as well as some postcards. The EvaStore lists this at 1,300 円.

Forum member NAveryW made an Evangelion doujin entitled Hoorei for Pen-Pen under the circle name Happy Puppy Circle. The First Edition is currently on sale on Ebay. This is the first Eva doujin made by an Evageeks member.

Young Ace Vol 2 with an Asuka Figure

The second volume of the anime/manga magazine Young Ace features a plugsuit clad Asuka on the cover was released yesterday. Just like with the first volume, which featured Rei on the cover, this volume includes a Kaiyodo figure. The first volume hit and left the shelves pretty quickly, and with Asuka on the cover of this one, it’ll probably sell out even quicker. For people who don’t live in Japan, you can always grab a copy from Amazon or your local importer.

Moyoco manga about Hideaki Anno

Manga about Anno

To celebrate Moyoco Anno’s 20 year anniversary of writing manga, a manga book about her husband Hideaki Anno has been released.

The book, roughly translated as “Unsupervised Director Report” is said to contain insider information about Anno and is currently available for purchase through Amazon Japan’s website. It’s priced at ￥840 ($8.97).

Sadamoto’s “Carmine” out on 3/25

Though announced some time ago, we never had a news post on it, so better late than never!

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is coming out with a third book devoted exclusively to his works, Carmine, to be released on 3/25/09. It will compile over 100 of the illustrations released since his 2nd book, Der Mond, from such works as Neon Genesis Evangelion (of course!), FLCL, Diebuster, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and .hack. The Limited Release is priced at a rather steep 13000 yen (about $133 US), but includes five bonuses: a deluxe outer case; a CD-ROM; two large-format stick posters of Rei and Asuka; Sadamoto’s table talk with Hideaki Anno, Mamoru Hosoda, and Kazuya Tsurumaki; and two archival-quality genga (animation key frame drawing) reproductions. Published by Kadokawa Shoten, 160 pages total, and B4 size (the same as Der Mond).

EDIT: Apologies for the error about Carmine “compiling Alpha and Der Mond“; I’m not entirely sure how I arrived at this conclusion, but I have been tarred and feathered accordingly. Also, the aforementioned “genga” are apparently not “genga” as I’ve come to understand them, but just two finished illustrations from the book printed on card stock…
