After 5 long years of waiting, we’re thrilled to announce the return of the Eva Fan Geeks Commentary. As with the original, commentators will not be able to edit the commentary directly. Post your episode 05 comments in this thread, and the best will be selected by the editors for inclusion in the commentary.

Evacommentary.org was originally started in 2004 by a group of dedicated EvaGeeks from Anime Nation Forums to serve as a compendium of information to be shared by all Eva fans. You can read a more detailed history of the commentary, its original members, and its scope here.

Evangelion Motorcycle to Compete

Run’a Entertainment, who you may remember from the Evangelion race car article, has entered a Kawasaki ZX-10R painted to look like Unit-01 in the Coca-Cola Zero Suzuka 8-Hour Endurance Road Race, the third race in the 2010 QTEL FIM World Endurance Championship Series. The race lasts from July 22-25. Racers Shinya Takeishi, Tamaki Serizawa, and Yoshihiro Konno will ride the bike. See more pictures at the links below.

Evangelion: Complete 2.0

Evangelion: Complete 2.0 is being released this summer. Early orders will receive a woven bag and a film strip as a bonus. The books have over 650 total pages as well as art and posters by Sadamoto. Dark Horse to Release Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse in August

Dark Horse Comics will begin selling Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse (Gauken Datenroku), which ran in Kadokawa’s Monthly Asuka magazine from 2007-2009, on August 11th of this year. The manga is a retelling of Eva as a shoujo supernatural school story.

“Shinji Ikari’s parents are gone, and he lives with his legal guardian, Ryoji Kaji, while attending the private NERV Academy. But no one ever told Shinji about its secrets . . . or that he’d find his fellow students Kaworu, Rei, and Asuka out on the streets late at night—fighting with sword, spear, and whip against an enemy that looks very human, but who Kaworu insists are beings called the Angels . . .”

Dark Horse also solicits the Shinji Ikari Raising Project manga.

Evangelion 2.0 showing in Dublin, Ireland

The Irish Film Institute will be screening Eva 2.0 as part of the IFI Anime Weekend on March 20th. Ticket prices and other information can be found at the IFI’s website.

Update (2/26): Andrew Partridge has confirmed that the movie will be shown with Japanese audio with English subtitles, and will be the 35mm festival film print that was used at Glasgow Film Festival screening.

Why is Evangelion 1.0 underperforming in the US?

John Oppliger, an employee of AnimeNation.com who answers fan questions about the anime industry and Japanese culture, recently addressed the lack of excitement and poor performance of Evangelion 1.0′s American distribution. He notes some potential causes such as screening in independent venues with little advertising, the delay in American licensing, and the views of many fans that the movies are simply a remake. So what do you think? As Eva fans, we get excited about any Evangelion related news but what about the non-diehards? Is 1.0 performing below expectations in the US? What are some of the reasons that there’s a lack of interest among American anime fans?

Evangelion: 1.0 Dub showing in 70+ Theaters

YANA is getting a nice limited release in North America. All but 7 of the cities are in Canada. As mentioned previously, Houston and Seattle will see screenings as well as Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Riverside, and Boston. All the rest are being shown across Canada on September 30. Info on dates and theaters is here. Another item of note is that Funimation is streaming the dub trailer on their Evangelion site.

Eva Episodes on Xbox Live Marketplace

It seems ADV Films and Anime Network, its digital media affiliate, have been adding various anime titles to Xbox Live. Today, ADV made the 26 TV episodes of Evangelion available on Xbox Live Marketplace. The episodes are 160 points. Looks like only the English dub is available, so sorry, sub people. Anyway, if you want to have Eva on your Xbox and prefer the dub, here’s your chance.

She finally has a name! A seiyuu too!

After much speculation, Mari’s full name has finally been revealed. EVA-EXTRA 01 magazine will announce her name as Mari Illustrious Makinami. Like other characters, she takes her name from two World War II naval vessels; the HMS Illustrious and the Japanese destroyer Makinami (written with different kanji). The magazine is also expected to confirm that Yuko Miyamura will reprise her role as Asuka and that her surname has been changed to Shikinami.

The last bit of news from EVA-EXTRA 01 is that Mari will be voiced by veteran seiyuu and vocalist Maaya Sakamoto. Sakamoto is no stranger to GAINAX anime, providing the voice of Lal’C in Top wo Nerae! 2.

Yahoo Live Action Eva Update

What many thought was an April Fool’s joke seems to be something after all. On April 1st, Yahoo! Japan posted a poll to let fans choose the actor they felt would best portray each Eva character. ITmedia reports that TV Asahi announced that they would begin shooting live action images if they could get the fans’ choices to participate. It seems to be a promotional event for the upcoming release of Evangelion 2.0. The fans top choices as of now are:

Maki Horikita as Rei Ayanami

Evangelion Underwear for Sale in Japan

Japanese character goods maker MOVIC is offering the official Evangelion Underpants Collection: Otoko no Tatakai(A Man’s Struggle). The underwear come in medium or large sizes and are available in Angel Monogram, Nerv and Seele logos, 6th Angel, and the humorous “Ugoite yo (Move!)” and “Nigecha Dame (I musn’t run away)”. One pair costs 525円, while all six are 3150円.

Evangelion Apps Coming to iPhone/iPod Touch

Tokyo mobile application developer Appliya Inc. has obtained a license to bring the first Evangelion related applications to iPhone and iPod Touch users. The applications will be based on the Rebuild movies and the first of them are planned for submission to Apple this month. Appliya’s first offerings will be casual use apps that will take advantage of the touch screen on the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the camera, calendar functions, and clock. UPDATE: Appliya has posted a clock and picture stamps on their website.

Evangelion: 1.0 Showing at AFI Dallas 2009

Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.0 has been selected to screen at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival. Information on times and dates will be posted in March. The festival will run from March 26 – April 2. Passes and tickets will be available online from the AFI Dallas website, by phone at 214-720-0663, and in person at AFI Dallas box office locations. Passes go on sale February 6 and tickets March 2.
