"We do this thing not because it is permitted. We do it because we have to. We do it...because we are compelled." --Rorschach, Watchmen

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name, but what's puzzling you, is the nature of my game."

There is a face beneath this mask of a screename, but it is not me. I am no more that face than I am the muscles beneath it, or the bones beneath them. Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, and ideas are bulletproof.

Quotes

"I don't think I like you guys watching anime, anyway. I don't care if you have been watching it for years -- think about it: the last thing a depressed person likes you who is "numb" and has no emotions needs is repetitive viewing of existential cartoons about suicidal orphans and social outcasts."

--- My mom's views on anime as directed to my sister's friend who introduced me to Evangelion

V: "I will now educate you...how a real encyclopedian writes an online encyclopedia!"

"Ahh! Please make it stop! What the hell ARE you?!"

V: "Stop whining. All I did was make a couple thousand articles. Interlink the first hundred articles, we've got a thousand new articles to create by the end of the week! Proofread for spelling! Get me more images! Pick up your keyboard and write more articles, DO something!! The night is still so young! And the real fun is yet to start...come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come-on-come-on-come-on-come-on COME ON!!!"

"...a monster! Oh God, you're a monster!!"

People are always asking me if I know Codename V. Is the screename "V" my bad dream? Or am I V’s?

"So you're him, huh?..."V"...The Avenger. The Killer of Killers. Nice outfit, not sure about the face though..."

"V, I imagine you in a room lit only by the glow of computer screens and blinking LEDs, eyes bloodshot but wide open, pupils shrunk to dots by caffeine. You are clicking relentlessly, typing unceasingly. The whir of hard disks and the hum of routers bear testament to your toil. Great deluges of data packets crash hither and thither across strained and creaking Ethernet cables." --ObsessiveMathsFreak

"I spit on metaphysics, sir" -- Gaff, Blade Runner

V: "Reichu! Why didn't you tell me I shouldn't throw all the newbies off of EvaPedia?"
Reichu: "I did tell you, word for word, "do not throw the newbies off of EvaPedia"".
V: "Yes, but you did not persuade me Reichu: you did not persuade me!"

It is a crime to try and learn the Truth? Is it a Sin to search for those things which you fear? My purpose in this world is knowledge, and the dissemination of it. And it is I who is to restore the fruits of my labors to the entire world. Wake up! Don’t be afraid of Knowledge! Humans who lose the capacity to think become creatures whose existence has no value. Think! You humans who are split into two worlds: unless you want the gulf between humans to expand into oblivion, you must THINK!! No one here is even interested in learning the Truth, a Truth that must be known...but *I* want to know! I want to learn what must me known!

What, what, ye sanguine, shallow-hearted boys!
Ye white-limed walls! ye alehouse painted signs!
Coal-black is better than another hue,
In that it scorns to bear another hue;
For all the water in the ocean
Can never turn the swan's black legs to white,
Although she lave them hourly in the flood.
--Titus Andronicus, Act IV Scene II

Terras Astraea reliquit --Titus Andronicus, Act IV Scene III

Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam/Et lingua eius loquetur iudicium/Beatus vir qui suffert tentationem/Quoniam cum probatus fuerit/Accipient coronam vitae/Kyrie, ignis divine, eleison/Oh quam sancta/Quam serena/Quam benigna/Quam amoena/Oh castitatis lilium

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom/And his toungue shall speak judgment/Blessed is the man who endures temptation/For, once he has been tried/He shall receive the crown of life/Oh, Lord, oh Holy Fire, have mercy/Oh how sacred/How serene/How Benevolent/How lovely/Oh lily of purity.

"Subtle he needs must be, who could seduce Angels" --John Milton, Paradise Lost

I see in EvaGeeks the strongest and smartest people who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see it squandered. God damn it, an entire generation writing computer code, updating IT databases; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing video games and anime action figures, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact...and we're very, very pissed off...

"Talk not to me of blasphemy, man! I'd strike the Sun if it insulted me! For could the Sun do that, then could I do the other" -- Captain Ahab, Moby Dick

"In eras when the major avenues of communication are controlled by censorship and an apathetic public tends to utilize art primarily for hedonistic gratification, serious art flees to the margins of society and to the more intimate genres, where it sets up beacheads in defense of its embattled position. Artist and audience rise to defend the sanctity of Art at those moments when its social function has become endangered, and its aesthetic and ethical purposes called into question."

"Live every week like its Shark Week" -- 30 Rock

"I wonder if V is one of those weird, obsessive Aspy chicks who, aside from being a total nerd as all Aspies are, gets extremely preoccupied with a fictional male to whom she relates in spite of incredible odds." --Reichu

"If the final Sachiel design were something I could have sex with, I probably would. But I wouldn't touch the old design with a 40-meter dildo." --Reichu

"Abashed the Devil stood/And felt how awful goodness is/and saw Virtue in her own shape how lovely/saw, And pined his loss." -- John Milton, Paradise Lost

Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God? What you end up doing is you spend your life searching for your father and God. You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen.

"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness..."

"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness...I love only that which they defend" -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers, Book IV, Chapter 5

It is incredibly important to pay incredibly close attention to even the tiniest detail about any great story. Creating full-length encyclopedias devoted to a topic ensures that it will be accurately understood and portrayed. But we must always remember that while even the smallest factoid is important, it is "important" only in the sense that it serves the underlying story. If you focus all of your attention on how sharp the sword is, you forget what the sword was meant to defend. If we focused our total attention, in painstaking detail and to the exclusion of all else, on the specific arrangements of armor plating on Evangelions, we would know how to build a perfectly accurate model kit reproduction...but we would forget the underlying themes of what this "Eva" creature represents thematically (power of god, interpersonal relationships, etc.) Such details do *support* the "texture" and background of the storyverse, but ultimately they're not what drew us in in the first place; it's not what we're defending, and trying to find meaning in. Or as Alan Moore put it:

"In approaching our subject with the sensibilities of statisticians and dissectionsists, we distance ourselves increasingly from the marvelous and spell-binding world of imagination whose gravity drew us into our studies in the first place...This is not to say that we should cease to establish facts and to verify our information, but merely to suggest that unless those facts can be imbued with the flash of poetic insight then they remain dull gems; semi-precious stones scarcely worth the collecting..." ----Watchmen
